Shopify vs Shopify Plus: when Plus pays for itself, and when Advanced is enough

A decision guide for UK brands selling £100k to £1m a month: current pricing, the break-even formula against Advanced, and the features that should decide the upgrade.

Shopify vs Shopify Plus: which one does a £100k to £1m a month brand need?

In the Shopify vs Shopify Plus decision, Advanced covers most UK brands selling £100k to £1m a month, and Plus pays for itself only when lower payment fees plus the features you will actually build outweigh a subscription roughly five to seven times higher. Revenue alone does not settle it. What you will build on Plus does.

Plus is the same platform with higher limits and lower fees, plus a set of tools that only matter if someone builds with them: checkout extensions, custom Shopify Functions, expansion stores and Launchpad. I have been building for the web for more than 17 years, and the pattern I see most is brands upgrading because they feel big enough, then running Plus exactly like Advanced. This guide gives you the current UK prices, a formula for the fee maths, and the questions that separate a sound upgrade from an expensive badge.

What do Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus cost in the UK?

The Shopify Advanced plan costs £344 a month billed monthly, or £259 a month billed yearly, according to Shopify's UK pricing page. Shopify Plus is priced on a term: £1,950 a month on a 1-year term or £1,800 a month on a 3-year term. The rates below are the standard online rates Shopify publishes for the UK.

Shopify UK plan pricing and payment fees, checked September 2026
PlanMonthly feeOnline card rate (Shopify Payments)Fee on third-party gatewaysStaff accounts
Grow£65 monthly or £49 billed yearly1.7% + 25p1%5
Advanced£344 monthly or £259 billed yearly1.5% + 25p0.6%15
Plus£1,950 (1-year term) or £1,800 (3-year term)1.3% + 25p0.2%Unlimited

One line in the Plus pricing needs attention. Shopify says more complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, and it does not publish the percentage or the threshold. Older articles still quote a fixed figure. Treat any number you read secondhand as out of date and get the quote in writing for your own revenue.

What does Shopify Plus add over Advanced?

The Shopify Plus feature gap is narrower than many older comparisons suggest. Flow is the clearest case: Shopify lists it as an app included on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. What remains exclusive is mostly about control and scale.

At what revenue does Shopify Plus pay for itself?

The Shopify Plus break-even is a formula, and the fee part of it is simple. On Shopify Payments the online card rate drops from 1.5% to 1.3%, a saving of 0.2% of online card revenue, with the 25p fixed fee unchanged. On a third-party gateway the Shopify fee drops from 0.6% to 0.2%, a saving of 0.4%.

So on card fees alone, Plus covers its extra cost when monthly online card revenue exceeds the subscription difference divided by 0.002, which is 500 times the difference, or 250 times for revenue through a third-party gateway. Before you run it, add the variable platform fee Shopify quotes for your revenue level to the cost side, because Shopify no longer publishes that rate and it can move the break-even a long way. The full test adds the terms fees miss:

  • Card fee saving: 0.002 multiplied by monthly online card revenue on Shopify Payments.
  • Gateway fee saving: 0.004 multiplied by monthly revenue through third-party gateways.
  • Apps retired: monthly subscriptions you can cancel because Plus tools replace them.
  • Development time saved: hours no longer spent working around Advanced limits.
  • Measured margin gain: profit from checkout or launch changes, proven by a test, not assumed.

If those five add up to more than the subscription difference, and any variable platform fee, Plus pays. These figures exclude VAT and assume standard UK card rates.

When is Shopify Advanced enough?

Shopify Advanced is enough for more £100k to £1m a month brands than the upgrade conversation suggests. In the Shopify audits we run, the brands that get little from Plus share a profile: one brand, one main market set up through Markets, a checkout that needs branding rather than logic, and a small team. If most of the points below describe you, stay on Advanced and spend the difference on the site itself.

  • Your checkout needs are covered by the editor, thank you page apps and public apps that use Functions.
  • You sell one brand from one store and do not need separate stores per region or for wholesale.
  • B2B fits inside three catalogues, or you do not sell wholesale online.
  • Fewer than 15 people need admin access.
  • Your redirect list sits comfortably under 100,000, including any planned migration.
  • No integration is hitting the 200 points a second GraphQL Admin API limit.

When two or more of these stop being true, run the formula above with real numbers.

What does moving from Advanced to Plus involve?

Moving to Shopify Plus is a plan change on your existing store, not a rebuild. Shopify says that after you sign, it will upgrade your store to the Plus plan within 24 business hours, and it does not charge to migrate. The store keeps its products, customers, orders, theme and URLs. The work is in using what you have paid for:

  1. Agree the term, the monthly fee and whether a variable platform fee applies, in writing.
  2. Audit your apps and list the ones that Flow, Launchpad or custom Functions can replace.
  3. Build and test any checkout extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps.
  4. Set up expansion stores only where a separate store earns its keep, and plan their URLs.
  5. Record your baseline conversion rate and fees before the switch, so the upgrade can be judged.

Expansion stores are new stores under one organisation, and Shopify requires them to carry the same brand. A new regional store means new URLs, so treat it with the same care as a migration that protects rankings.

Which questions should you answer before upgrading to Shopify Plus?

The Shopify Plus decision gets easier when the answers are written down before the sales call. These are the questions we work through with a brand, and each one has a number or a named owner as its answer.

  • What will we build on Plus in the first 90 days that we cannot build on Advanced?
  • How much of our monthly revenue runs through Shopify Payments, and how much through other gateways?
  • Which app subscriptions will we cancel, and on what date?
  • Does our revenue or business model trigger a variable platform fee, and what is it?
  • Does a 3-year term make sense, given where the brand expects to be in year three?
  • Who builds and maintains the checkout extensions and custom Functions once they exist?

If the first question has no answer, the upgrade is premature. Plus rewards brands with a backlog that Advanced is blocking. It does very little for a brand that has not yet used what Advanced offers.

When does a rebuild matter more than the plan?

A Shopify plan changes your fees and limits, and it opens up certain tools. It does not change your theme code or the apps loading on every page. More often than not, the conversion problem sits there: a heavy theme carrying scripts from apps nobody uses any more, and product pages that bury the information buyers need.

Those problems follow a store onto Plus unchanged. A brand paying roughly £1,500 a month more for Plus while its mobile product pages load slowly has its priorities backwards. Fix the storefront first, measure what it does to conversion, then decide whether the platform is the next constraint. Our view on why site speed is a growth lever covers how we measure that. If the rebuild also means replatforming or changing URL structures, plan the redirects before anything goes live, because the redirect limit on your plan decides how much of that map you can carry.

Questions we get asked

Is Shopify Flow only available on Shopify Plus?
No. Shopify Flow is an app included at no extra cost on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. The Send HTTP Request action needs Grow or above, and tasks created by custom partner apps need Plus. Usage limits also follow your plan's API limits, so heavy automation runs with more headroom on Plus.
How many stores do you get with Shopify Plus?
A Plus contract covers one main store and nine expansion stores at no extra cost. Expansion stores must carry the same brand as the main store, and Shopify uses them for international stores, wholesale, staff or VIP stores and retail locations. Shopify's pricing page lists extra stores beyond ten at $300 a month each, or a revenue share.
Does Shopify charge to migrate to Shopify Plus?
Shopify says it does not charge to migrate to Plus, though it offers paid services for custom needs. For a store already on Shopify, the move is a plan change completed within 24 business hours. The real cost is the development work to use Plus features, such as checkout extensions and custom Functions.
What revenue does Shopify suggest for upgrading to Plus?
Shopify says brands typically upgrade when online sales reach about $80,000 a month, while noting that needs vary. That figure comes from Shopify's own sales page. On fee savings alone, the break-even against Advanced sits far higher, so the case below that level has to rest on features you will build and use.
